What is Autoimmune Disease?

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system attacks foreign cells without distinguishing between healthy cells and misdirects the body's own immunological reaction. The immune system only acts against pathogens such as viruses, bacteria or fungi that can be harmful to the body. Since each body cell carries certain molecules that it identifies as belonging to the body in its cell membrane, the immune system can distinguish between "internal" and "foreign". In the case of autoimmune diseases, the immune system perceives healthy cells, tissues and organs as enemies and attacks.

What are Autoimmune Diseases?

There are more than 80 defined autoimmune diseases, and while some autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus and rheumatoid arthritis are well-known, there are also rare and difficult-to-diagnose autoimmune diseases.

An autoimmune disease can be defined as the failure of the body's own immune system, which has a natural function in the organism. These diseases have various forms and are caused by the immune system developing a defensive reaction against the body's own tissue. When a long-term immune response develops against the body's own antigens, chronic inflammatory tissue damage occurs.

These can be specific to an organ or tissue, limited to individual areas, or manifest as a systemic reaction throughout the body. The immune system can either affect a specific organ (thyroid, kidney, pancreas, intestine, skin, nerves) or act against the entire system, causing an extra-organ disease.

Some of the autoimmune diseases are:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Type 1 Diabetes

Ulcerative colitis

Intestinal diseases such as Crohn's and celiac disease

Skin diseases such as psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris and vitiligo

Graves' disease and Hashimoto's

Addison's disease

Uveitis

Behçet's disease

Rheumatoid arthritis

Butterfly disease

Polymyositis

Sjögren syndrome

Scleroderma

Vasculitis

Anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome

Myasthenia gravis

The symptoms of autoimmune diseases can be very diverse. The symptoms of patients with autoimmune diseases depend mainly on where in the body the immune system is affecting. Several autoimmune diseases can occur at the same time.
